In The Last Days Of Ninety-Nine

I'm sitting all alone in a crowd next to me
wondering out low where the future might be
the dog has been fed and the news is on time
in the last days of ninety nine

the Clearwater Madonna silently weeps
and the last I heard...the Walrus still sleeps...
we creep-up to the fences but never over the line
in the last days of ninety nine

we have come a long way and nowhere at all
we talk a big game but seldom answer the call
we're all racing ahead and falling way behind
in the last days of ninety nine

we yearn for reason and look for truth
it all slips away like the days of our youth
we roam the world in search of God
without ever looking in our own backyard
we'll take a swim in our neighbor's pool
bring a sandwich... and a handgun to school
go to bed a genius and wake up a fool

we've run so far with our blinders on
that we don't know where we've been
or how long we've been gone
we're walking in a daze running out of time
in the last days of ninety nine
